You’re Running
HumanOS 1.0.
There Is No Upgrade.
The internet, smartphones, social feeds, short-form video, and now AI are turning intelligence and human connection into commodities. Computers get better every year. We don’t. The fix isn’t more technology. It’s a renaissance of human ability.
Technology is a tool, not the answer. The next revolution won’t come from smarter machines. It will come from humans who remember how to think alongside them.
The force
you can’t see.
The translator
you need.
In a world this sophisticated, technology is invisible. It curates what we see, automates what we do, and quietly decides what we think about. To most people it might as well be magic.
Technology has turned knowledge, learning, and even connection into a utility, as ordinary as the electricity in the wall. We know more than any generation in history. Yet we’re rarely surprised anymore, and we’re not any happier for it.
Every tribe in history had someone who could tame the forces nobody else could see. Someone who seemed to read the future and fix what was broken. That person was the shaman. Not the strongest hunter. The translator.
Technology Shamanism is the practice of being that translator today. Using technology for a purpose, never as a spectacle. Staying trustworthy, empathetic, and useful. And making sure the tools serve the tribe, not the other way around.
Technology is a tool.
Not the answer, not the product, not alive. Use it simply and sparingly. And whatever you do, don’t become one.
HumanOS 1.0 can’t be patched.
Computers evolve 10,000 times faster than the people who run them. We can’t out-compute them. But we feel, we wonder, and we know right from wrong. No tool can.
The future lies in our past.
Look at the world before the internet and you’ll see what we all crave: everything technology isn’t giving us.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Da Vinci knew it 500 years ago. One task, one line of thought, followed all the way to the dead end. That’s where the leaps happen.
We traded the spark for the feed.
The Analog Spark
Boredom built things. You made the mixtape, fixed the bike, read the book, called the house and talked to someone’s parents. Information was scarce, so imagination did the heavy lifting. It gave us some of the best music and biggest cultural shifts of the century.
The Connected Feed
Everything got easier and everyone got closer. Then the feed took over. In 1995 we told kids never to get in a stranger’s car. By 2022 we were summoning strangers from the internet for exactly that.
Intelligence on Tap
AI now writes, answers, and decides on demand. Knowledge, learning, and connection are utilities, like the internet and the phone before them. We’re never left not knowing, so we’re never surprised. And the analog thinking that made us original is quietly disappearing.
Once knowledge becomes a utility, the machines win. Every time. But they can’t be curious. They can’t be resilient. They can’t love.
HumanOS 1.0: Why the Next
Revolution Is a Renaissance.
Every few years a new technology promises to change everything. The computer. The internet. The smartphone. Social media. Now AI. Each one delivered. And each one took something with it: our boredom, our attention, our patience, our ability to sit with a problem and think it through ourselves. We know more than ever, and we’re less surprised, and less happy, than ever.
Tom Roberto grew up in the analog spark of the 1980s and 90s, then spent 26 years building the technology that replaced it. His argument is simple: we can’t upgrade the human, so we have to stop trying to keep up with the machine. Instead, we put the tools back in their place, lean into what only humans have, curiosity, resilience, love, and reach for what the Renaissance reached for. Culture. Science. Literature. Art. Craft.
Part field story, part philosophy, part gut check. Audiences walk out seeing technology for what it is, a tool, and themselves for what they are: the only part of the system that can’t be replaced.
- The invisible forceWhy technology feels like magic, and why every tribe needs a shaman to translate it.
- The analog sparkWhat the world before the feed taught a generation about creativity, and what it cost us to lose it.
- Commodity intelligenceKnowledge is becoming a utility. Once it is, the machines win every time. And when you always know, you’re never surprised.
- HumanOS 1.0The 80s computer ads sold us multitasking. Humans don’t work that way. We think in a line, hit dead ends, and that’s where the leaps come from.
- The next renaissanceCuriosity, resilience, and love, fused with culture, science, literature, and art. That’s the next revolution. Anyone can be the shaman.
Allow yourself not to know
Build analog moments into your day. Sit with the question before you search it. Surprise only happens when you don’t already have the answer.
Invite the unaware
Bring someone into the meeting who doesn’t know the backstory. Fresh eyes find the jumps the experts can’t see.
Monotask to make the leap
One thing at a time, followed all the way through. Multitasking robs you of the focus it takes to hit the dead end, and the breakthrough behind it.
Start a renaissance
Pair every new tool with something only humans bring: curiosity, culture, love. Then go make something.
